Family events, the local way.

Franklin's a young-family town as much as it's a retiree town. The actual local family rotation, as people who live here will tell you: Currahee Brewing on a sunny afternoon (lawn games, live music, kids can run around), Macon County Recreation Park for the playground + pool, the Town Square for Pickin' on the Square and the Saturday Tailgate Market, Ruby Cinemas for a real second-run movie night, and the Macon County Public Library as the rainy-day rescue. Gem mining and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad are great once-or-twice trips — not the weekly rhythm.

The spots worth your morning

Currahee Brewing Company (50 E Main St)
The young-family favorite locals will mention before anything else. Beer garden out back with lawn games, kid space, frequent live music on Friday evenings. Bring the dog too. Food trucks rotate on weekends.
In Franklin
Macon County Recreation Park (1288 Georgia Rd)
Playground, public pool (open seasonally), ball fields, walking paths. 4th of July fireworks are best viewed from here. Free during the day.
5 min · Franklin
Town Square — Pickin' on the Square + Tailgate Market
Two of the best free family moves in town happen here: Saturday morning Tailgate Market (year-round, ramps up spring/summer) and Pickin' on the Square (2nd & 4th Saturdays May–Oct, 6 PM, free bluegrass).
In Franklin
Ruby Cinemas (2097 Georgia Rd)
Independent four-screen theater showing first-run movies — the local alternative to driving over an hour to a multiplex. Affordable, no-frills, friendly. (828) 524-2076 for showtimes.
6 min · Franklin
Macon County Public Library (149 Siler Farm Rd)
The rainy-Saturday secret. Story time for little ones, LEGO Club for grade school, family movie nights. Programming is nearly all free. The Fontana Regional Library card works here.
5 min · Franklin
Cowee Valley gem mines
Sluicing is the whole activity — four-year-old-tested. Mason Mountain (5315 Bryson City Rd) and Sheffield (385 Sheffield Farms Rd) both offer enriched buckets so kids find color. A standing once-or-twice activity, not weekly.
14 min · Cowee
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
Scenic train rides from the Bryson City depot (45 Mitchell St) — Polar Express in winter, river-gorge excursions in summer. About an hour's drive — a planned-trip day, not a drop-in.
60 min · Bryson City
Sunnyside Park / Whitmire Property (off First St)
Franklin's 12-acre East Franklin town park — a 6,000 sq ft skatepark (ramps, rails, bowls), an 18-hole disc golf course, and a new inclusive playground, with a pump track and walking paths on the way. Skaters from toddlers to 60-somethings; the disc golf is free.

"Currahee on a Friday afternoon, Rec Park on a Saturday morning — that's the actual rotation here."

Good to know

Best kid-friendly hangout in town?

Currahee Brewing's outdoor space is the local-family default — beer garden, lawn games, live music most Fridays. The Macon County Recreation Park (1288 Georgia Rd) covers the rest: playground, pool, walking paths, ball fields.

When does the Macon County Fair happen?

September 23–26, 2026, at the Macon County Fairgrounds. Rides, food, livestock, baked-goods judging — the classic county-fair experience.

Indoor options on a rainy day?

Ruby Cinemas (first-run movies, 2097 Georgia Rd), the Macon County Public Library (story time, LEGO Club, computer lab), and the Scottish Tartans Museum on Main Street for a quick history wander.

Free family events?

Pickin' on the Square (bring a chair). All library programs. The Saturday Tailgate Market on the Square. Currahee's outdoor space has no cover. 4th of July at the Rec Park is free with fireworks at dusk.

Where do families take out-of-town visitors?

Currahee in the afternoon, gem mining at Mason Mountain or Sheffield for an hour, dinner downtown. Visitors with a full day to spare: add a Cullasaja Gorge waterfall drive (Dry Falls + Bridal Veil) or the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson City.

Is Pickin' on the Square at 6 PM or 7 PM?

6 PM. Older sources say 7 — they're out of date. Town of Franklin confirms 6 PM.
